The CW is most definitely continuing its push into sports. The network that Paramount Global majority co-owned since 2006 until last year when they and Warner Bros. Discovery sold majority stake to Nexstar, has taken Paramount content after all, but probably not what you were expecting.
It has been announced that they have picked up the National Football League's long-running Emmy-winning highlights and analysis series Inside the NFL. Running every season since 1977 from week 1 to after the Super Bowl, the series made its debut on HBO, running there until 2008. It then moved to Showtime, where it aired until 2021, specifically through the end of the 2020 season. That's when it moved to Paramount+, where it aired for the last two seasons. However, in April it was revealed that the streamer would be dropping the series. The league then began shopping the series and has now found its new home. The show provides previously unseen angles of important game moments as captured by NFL Films cinematographers. The CW Network president Dennis Miller lauds the acquisition "We are excited to partner with NFL Films and welcome Inside The NFL to the CW Sports family." Hyping up the series, he states “For almost five decades, Inside The NFL has been an industry leader in showcasing can’t-miss weekly highlights, unprecedented behind-the-scenes content, exclusive access to players and lively discussion. By combining this premiere NFL content with our robust broadcast audience, we look forward to bringing this legendary sports series to more fans than ever before and to advertisers for the first time."
The CW Sports has started up since the change in ownership, broadcasting LIV Golf (as iffy as that may be) and the docuseries 100 Days to Indy. The move to The CW marks the first time Inside the NFL will be on broadcast television, despite having used many of CBS's NFL talent, such as James Brown, Dan Marino, Phil Simms, Cris Carter, and Julian Edelman. Unfortunately, this move means none of the CBS talent will be retained, as the network looks for new hosts and producers in what they call a "revamped" "reboot" edition.
It will continue to air on Tuesday nights, as it has since the Showtime years. It was on Wednesdays on HBO. The season begins September 5, and will stream on the network's website and app. While no premiere dates for The CW's fall schedule have otherwise been given, the schedule itself was given on May 18. Tuesday nights were the network's first full sitcoms block in quite a while: The CBC's Son of a Critch and Run the Burbs, CTV's Children Ruin Everything, and Channel 4's Everyone Else Burns. The adjustments in the wake of this addition have not been announced.
