'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Season 2 Gets 'Great Dad Energy' and Kirk And Spock 'Platonic Love At First Sight'

The second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds heads to Paramount+ this Thursday, June 15, and with the Writers Guild of America strike, most if not all of the press is coming from the actors. In particular, Anson Mount, who plays Captain Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romjin, who plays Una Chin-Riley aka Number One, and Ethan Peck and Paul Wesley, the show's Commander Spock and future Captain James T. Kirk.

This season Pike and his U.S.S. Enterprise crew continue in their traversal to where no man had gone before but will, encounter new life, and tackle their inner demons with dramatic flair. More importantly, Pike himself will continue to be a gentle and understanding figure for those around him, not that he’ll recognize his dad-like qualities so easily. In discussing it, Mount has said "I think that he’s one of these guys who’s also constantly amazed that he’s been put in a position of leadership, It’s more comfortable for him, sometimes, to throw the question to the room and say, ‘I’m out of ideas. Who wants to come up with a solution?’ But in a weird way, that’s a great dad personality, isn’t it?"

Rebecca Romijn's Una still has some unfinished legal troubles regarding her arrest by the Federation for concealing her Illyrian heritage. She remarks how even the young can have the necessary intuitions to win out. “When you start relying on your crew on the Enterprise and they’re the ones who end up saving the day, it’s like when you see your kid do something. You’re like, ‘I never would have thought of that. That’s amazing. You’re right.'" Her closeness with Pike will also seemingly be a focal point in the resolution, and most probably beyond “She’s relying on Pike to help her out and track down the only person that she thinks can help her out,” Romijn teases. “She’s decided to live authentically. She’s not going to hide anymore.”

Meanwhile, the legendary friendship between Kirk and Spock will especially incubate here beyond their first interactions in the first season finale. Wesley said “Ethan [Peck] was much more casual about it than I was, I was like, ‘Oh my god, this is a big deal’ when we’re filming. But of course, you can’t be aware of that.” Their introduction in the series is called “somewhat casual" however Wesley thinks Kirk was drawn to Spock for a reason, finding him intriguing. Peck calls the feelings mutual. “I recall Spock being intrigued and also very skeptical,” He cites Kirk's vibes of confidence, charm, and intelligence, with immediate mutual respect and admiration, elaborating “On Spock’s end, because he’s still learning to trust his emotions, I think he has this impulse about Kirk and is very cautious about it. And for good reason, because Kirk can be so devilish."
