'Tulsa King' Spinoff 'NOLA King' With Samuel L. Jackson In The Works

Saaaaaalutations! If you thought Paramount+ nabbing Sylvester Stallone to star in Tulsa King said something about what television had become, hear this out: Tulsa King has a New Orleans-set spinoff in development, aptly titled NOLA King , and it’s set to star Samuel L. Jackson. Exact details of NOLA King are under wraps, but Jackson’s character,   Russell Lee Washington Jr.,   has been described as similar to Stallone’s Dwight Manfredi. The series would be set up by a recurring arc in Tulsa King ’s third season, currently in production in Oklahoma and Atlanta, which explains why Variety ’s  telling didn’t call the single appearance they implied as a backdoor pilot. Jackson is expected to film his episodes in July, with production on NOLA King looking at a February start. Dave Erickson will be writing the spin-off after previously taking over showrunner duties on  Tulsa King starting with this new third  season.  He is expected to transition fro...

'Ray Donovan' Spinoff-Ish 'The Donovans' Headed For Showtime Tier

When Showtime’s integration into Paramount+ was originally announced, spin-offs of previous popular Showtime shows were said to be quite a focus. Whether they were multiple from Billions and Dexter or developing Nurse Jackie and Weeds sequel series, it seems it’s going to be Ray Donovan that will beat them all to the punch. The Donovans, a new series loosely based on the popular drama, has been ordered for Paramount+, but specifically at the Paramount+ with Showtime tier, to premiere later this year.

The Donovans will follow two generations of gangsters, their businesses, their complex relationships and their fixer for the problems that arise. With the most powerful clients in Europe, family fortunes and reputations will be at risk, odd alliances will unfold, and there’s betrayal no matter where you look. While the family might be London’s most elite fixers, the nature of affairs means tomorrow’s never guaranteed.

Sherlock Holmes and Aladdin remake director Guy Ritchie is attached to direct and executive produce. Top Boy creator Ronan Bennett is writing the 10 episodes of the series that will make the first season. “I’m thrilled to be working with Showtime, Paramount+ and 101 Studios. We’re going to deliver a show which provides massive thrills, entertainment and a huge rush of adrenaline for audiences around the world,” said Bennett, who produced and wrote all episodes of the British crime drama, and since created the TV adaptation starring Eddie Redmayne of The Day of the Jackal, for which he is also showrunner. “At the same time, I’m totally focused on exploring real characters, in body and in soul, and I’m committed to writing stories with deep dramatic impact. We’re going to get under the skin of the criminal underworld, in a way which will show you the bone-deep truths of how they live and how it sometimes will – inevitably – impact on our own lives.” Ritchie most recently created and directs The Gentlemen, a series adaptation of his 2019 Miramax film, premiering on Netflix on March 7. The pair executive produce with David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, David Hutkin and Ivan Atkinson.

Glasser, who is CEO of 101 Studios, had this to say “We’re elated to partner with Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios to reimagine the Ray Donovan legacy together. Having Guy and Ronan sign on to join us on this incredible journey has been a true blessing. We could not be more thrilled to take this huge hit and create a new and exciting show for audiences all over the world.” Meanwhile Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios President Chris McCarthy remarked “Guy Ritchie and Ronan Bennett are the ideal dream-team to create a new global hit franchise with The Donovans. Guy’s riveting and stylish directorial approach combined with Ronan’s captivating and brutally authentic writing will transfix audiences into a wild and twisted world full of new adventures.” Time will tell how loose the ties truly are.
