Former 'Ray Donovan' Spinoff 'The Associate' Becomes 'MobLand', Releases Trailer
Just over a year ago, it was reported Showtime was developing a Ray Donovan spinoff called The Donovans with Guy Ritchie attached to direct and executive produce. By the end of October, it was revealed to be called The Associate, shed its place as a Ray Donovan spinoff, and hooked Tom Hardy, Helen Mirren, and Pierce Brosnan to star. Now it’s known as MobLand, and will premiere on March 30 on Paramount+ in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia, with further rollout to be announced later. A trailer was released Tuesday morning
Interestingly, despite starting at Showtime, all sources indicate that the series will be available on all Paramount+ tiers and not exclusive to the Paramount+ With Showtime tier. Could it still cycle into the Paramount+ with Showtime network? Who knows, doesn’t look like any major places are keeping track of that and I’m not subscribed to the network.
The official series description states that the show is “centered around two warring families based in London whose enterprises stretch all corners of the globe and the fiercely loyal “fixer” charged with protecting one of them at all costs.” Hardy will play Harry Da Souza, described as “a professional conciliator on behalf of the Harrigan family.” Brosnan will play Conrad Harrigan, “the head of a very successful Irish crime family based out of London for whom Harry works.” Mirren will play Maeve Harrigan, Conrad’s wife and the Harrigan family matriarch. In December, more series regulars were added: Paddy Considine, Joanne Froggatt, Lara Pulver, Anson Boon, Mandeep Dhillon and Jasmine Jobson. It also stars Geoff Bell, Daniel Betts, Lisa Dwan and Emily Barber. Froggatt will play Jan Da Souza, Harry’s wife, while the other three castings broaden the Harrigan family. Considine will play Kevin Harrigan, the son in the family. Pulver will play Kevin’s wife Bella, Boon will play his rebellious son Eddie. Dhillon will play daughter Seraphina, while Jobson has the role of Zosia, who works for Harry and is one of his closest associates. A trailer has not been released.
MobLand reunites Hardy with RocknRolla director Ritchie while keeping Mirren Paramount+-tied after wrapping the second and final season of 1923, which just premiered. Mirren and Brosnan reunite as well, having recently shot Netflix’s The Thursday Murder Club. Dhillon is best known for her series role inCSI: Vegas, with other credits include the Netflix comedy seriesAfter Lifeand the BBC teen seriesSome Girls. She is currently starring in the BBC One comedy seriesAvoidance. Jobson is best known for her BAFTA-winning role as Jaq in the British crime seriesTop Boy. Her other credits include the filmsSurge andBird, and the ITVX limited seriesPlatform 7. Froggatt is most known for playing Anna Bates on Julian Fellowes’ popular period series Downton Abbey, which earned her three Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe win for Best Supporting Actress. She will reprise the role in the third Downton Abbey spin off film currently set for a September 2025 release. Other credirs include the 2017 film Mary Shelley, the BBC drama Sherwood, and ITV’s Angela Black.
“My wife’s the brains behind the charm. She holds me together,” Brosnan’s character says in the trailer. “That makes her the most dangerous of all.” Said trailer is bloody, filled with guns strong narration. “Power is a hungry thing, and there’s always a rat bastard looking to take what’s mine,” Brosnan continues.
MobLand is executive produced by Keith Cox, Nina L. Diaz, David C. Glasser, Ritchie, Jez Butterworth, Ronan Bennett, Kris Thykier, Ivan Atkinson, Tom Hardy, Dean Baker, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin, and Bob Yari. It is produced in association with MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios and distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution.
