Really Paramount+? No uploaded clips? Damn, just trying to bring some unique spice to coverage. Just three weeks after the first season of MobLand ended, the streamer has renewed the series for a second season.
MobLand stars Pierce Brosnan, Tom Hardy, and Helen Mirren, who powered the series premiere, released March 30 to 26 million views over the first 70 days in the U.S and other English-speaking markets, and the first 9 days for non-English speaking territories, where the show debuted May 30, according to internal streaming data. That makes it the second biggest launch for a Paramount+ original series behind Landman, per internal global data for the first 90 days of release. MobLand has made every Nielsen Top 10 list of Streaming Originals for the past five weeks in a row, a streak which started with the premiere of episode 3.
“With more than 26 million viewers and climbing, MobLand has become a resounding triumph – driven by the creative brilliance of Guy, Jez, Ronan and David Glasser, and brought to life by the powerhouse performances of Tom, Pierce, and Helen,” said Chris McCarthy, Co-CEO of Paramount and President of Showtime/MTV Entertainment. “We are elated to greenlight a second season of this global phenomenon, which has dominated both domestic and international charts and soared to #1 in the UK.”
In the series, two mob families clash in a war that threatens to topple empires and lives. In addition to Hardy, Brosnan and Mirren, the cast also includes Paddy Considine, Joanne Froggatt, Lara Pulver, Anson Boon, Mandeep Dhillon, Jasmine Jobson, Geoff Bell, Daniel Betts, Lisa Dwan and Emily Barber. MobLand comes from creator, writer and exec producer Ronan Bennett and writer Jez Butterworth, who executive produce alongside Ritchie, with the production companies being David C. Glasser’s 101 Studios and MTV Entertainment Studios. Its other executive producers are Keith Cox, Nina L. Diaz, Kris Thykier, Ivan Atkinson, Hardy, Dean Baker, Anthony Byrne, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin and Bob Yari.
“MobLand was one of those incredible moments where Chris McCarthy came to us with the vision of creating the next great mob series and, after traversing the UK countryside in a quest to land Guy Ritchie, we both came to the realization that we knew the exact formula,” said Glasser, CEO of 101 Studios. “With the extraordinary talent of Guy, Ronan, Jez and our incredible cast, we brought that vision to life.”
“TV was a brand new world for me and I was reluctant to commit to a TV overall, but Chris, David and the teams at Paramount and 101 Studios completely changed my perspective with their bold creative vision and razor-sharp strategic insight,” Butterworth said. “Collaborating with Chris, David, Guy and our stellar cast has been nothing short of inspiring and I’m excited to dive into the second season of MobLand.”
Before the renewal came down, Brosnan was asked what he would like to see, and he responded “ “I honestly don't know what's going to happen. I have some ideas in my head, but I have not expressed those to Guy Ritchie or to Jez Butterworth or Ronan Bennett, who are the writers. I have no idea. I don't know. I mean, I didn't know going in last time, so there's a part of me that's quite happy to let it all just unfold before me. Right now, I'm just feeding the chickens, I'm painting, I'm golfing, and that's what I do — enjoying life.”
The Season 1 finale, “The Beast in Me,” saw the setup for seismic shifts across the Harrigan crime empire. Conrad (Brosnan) and Maeve (Helen Mirren) have been imprisoned, leaving Kevin (Considine) and Harry (Hardy) to take control. The family managed to regroup, expose the mole (Lisa Dwan’s O’Hara), and deliver an on-target retaliation. Still, danger is afoot. Maeve continues to manipulate, Eddie (Boon) is spiraling into darkness, and Seraphina's (Mandeep Dhillon) loyalty is under question. Kat McAllister (Janet McTeer) is still pulling strings in the shadows, so the bloodshed seems far from over.
