'Clifford the Big Red Dog' Review

Paramount initially told the movie to roll over until 2022 back in September but a strong October box office changed some minds. Paramount decided to release Clifford the Big Red Dog movie just in time to impress the Academy and be an awards contender for this year's Oscars...coincidence?? I think not.

EDITOR’S NOTE: CONTAINS SPOILERS

All jokes aside I enjoyed watching this movie in theaters but anyone watching at home on Paramount+ is in for a treat as well.

The movie features Emily Elizabeth Howard, a middle school girl, a bit of an outcast that eventually meets a red-colored puppy who also never really fit in. The movie will certainly hit the nostalgia for adults who grew up watching the animated Clifford cartoon, but the movie is also funnier than I expected with some hilarious moments.

The star of the movie is Oliver, one of Emily's friends from middle school, he brings comedic relief throughout the entire movie. Kids will certainly enjoy the movie as it's full of dogs and physical comedy to keep them entertained, but there is a strong message about not being afraid to stand out that I think will resonate with all audiences. The movie begins to go off the rails in the third act with some unrealistic events, but this is a movie centered around 30 foot red dog living in NYC so I’m not going to be too critical. All said this is a great movie to watch as a family, with young children, or if you just need a lighthearted movie to watch.

Clifford the Big Red Dog movie has done exceptionally well at the box office with a $16M opening weekend and $24M to date despite the day and date release. That opening is the 3rd best family movie opening since the beginning of the pandemic only behind Addams Family 2 ($17M) and Space Jam: A New Legacy ($31M). The movie has also been a hit on Paramount+ as they just announced the service's best week ever, with an additional 1M subscribers added in the past week!

Rating 7/10
