Jon Hamm To Play Coach Carr In The 'Mean Girls' Musical

At casting director age, you're going to have a lot of urges. And apparently one of those urges is to cast Jon Hamm in the film adaptation of the Mean Girls musical, coming from Paramount once again, for Paramount+. The Mad Men and Top Gun: Maverick star is playing Coach Carr, North Shore High School's gym coach and incompetent sex-ed teacher.

He joins a cast that includes Angourie Rice, Auli'i Cravalho, Reneé Rapp, Jaquel Spivey, Jenna Fischer, Busy Philipps, Avantika, Christopher Briney, Bebe Wood, and reprising from the original film, Tim Meadows, and Tina Fey. Fey wrote not only the original 2004 film, but the musical this film more directly adapts, and is writing this iteration as well. The Coach Carr role was originated by Dwayne Hill in the film that starred Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lizzy Caplan and Daniel Franzese as Cady Heron, Regina George, Janis Ian and Damian. From what I can find, the role is not present in the stage version.

It was also recently reported that the film had cast the roles of Kevin G. and Mr. Rapp. They will be played by Mahi Alam and Conor Ratliff respectively. Kevin G., played in the original film by Rajiv Surendra, in Cady’s teammate on the Mathletes with a crush on Janis. Alan is a relative newcomer that will soon be seen recurring on the Disney+ series American Born Chinese. Mr. Rapp is one of the school’s teachers, seemingly created for this version but could just as much have just gone unnamed in previous adaptations. Ratliff is creator and star of The George Lucas Talk Show with mainstream credits on Search Party and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

All versions of the story follow teenager Cady as she moves from Africa with her scientist parents to the Illinois suburbs. She gets swept up in the ways of her new high school’s social hierarchy, includng the popular clique she befriends, called the Plastics. This film adaptation of the musical is directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. with music by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin. Kyle Hanagami is choreographing.
