'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' And 'Lower Decks' Have Been Renewed Ahead Of Summer Season Premieres

Even just 3 weeks away from Star Trek: Picard's finale, and with Discovery's end on the horizon, the Star Trek franchise marches forward on Paramount+. The streamer on Tuesday renewed Strange New Worlds for season 3 and Lower Decks for season 5. As for Prodigy, its second season was reconfirmed for a 2023 premiere, albeit very late in the year, called "winter".

This is ahead of their second and fourth seasons, which will both premiere this summer. Strange New Worlds is up first, with a June 15 premiere in the U.S., the U.K., Australia, Latin America, Brazil, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. weekly releases of new episodes will follow. It's not known if Lower Decks will immediately pick up in Strange New Worlds's place immediately after their season finishes, but it is set for a late summer bow regardless.

A crossover of both shows will be staged during an episode this season on Strange New Worlds, featuring both animation and live-action. Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome are the Lower Decks delegates for the Jonathan Frakes-directed episode.

TVLine calls the renewal for Strange New Worlds "early", but not so for Lower Decks, which makes sense to anyone who has paid attention to animation renewals for several years now. Disney Television Animation in particular has been very fond of renewing in advance of series and season premieres for close to a decade now, that it's almost standard. There's also Animation Domination's double renewals for its stalwarts, the latest round. Heck, Royal Crackers was also renewed for season 2 on Tuesday before the series premieres Sunday night on Adult Swim.

By the time these just-ordered seasons air, it might be doing so with new compatriots at the very least in development, with slots opening up vacated by Picard, which is set to conclude on April 20 after 3 seasons, and Discovery, which began the franchise's streaming voyage, wrapping in 2024 with its fifth season.
