A 'Galaxy Quest' TV Series Is Back In Early Development At Paramount+

There's a new attempt to bring Galaxy Quest to the small screen, and this time it's at Paramount+. However, they're basically back at square one.

The streamer and Paramount Television Studios are working together to adapt the 1999 sci-fi comedy film  for television. Galaxy Quest starred Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, Daryl Mitchell, Enrico Colantoni, and in their film debuts, Justin Long and Rainn Wilson. The plot goes that the cast of a cult classic sci-fi show, particularly a Star Trek parody, who are recruited by Thermians, a race of aliens from a distant galaxy who think the show is real, to assist in an actual interstellar conflict.

This is the latest attempt at adapting the film to television. The journey began when it was reported in 2015 that Amazon had a series in development reuniting the film’s cast. However, Rickman's death in January 2016 put the kibosh on it, an obstacle that Rockwell believed would be impossible to overcome. There have since been various writers attached to the project, including Paul Scheer in August 2017, whose version was put on hold following the dismissal of Amy Powell as president of Paramount Television in July 2018 to allow for Paramount's management to be re-established. In June 2021, Georgia Pritchett stated that she and Simon Pegg were developing a Galaxy Quest TV series.

Dean Parisot directed the original film with the screenplay written by David Howard and Robert Gordon, with the story by Howard. So far the eight years have made quite the difference regarding who's attached, as the only member of the creative team officially attached is Mark Johnson. He was a producer of the original film and would serve as an executive producer on the potential series. Galaxy Quest is currently streaming on Paramount+.
