Another Taylor Sheridan series is sticking around, this in particular with a simpler and previous title. Lioness, the drama starring Zoe Saldaña, Laysla De Oliveira and Nicole Kidman, has been renewed for a second season at Paramount+.
The series ends a yearlong stint where it was known as Special Ops: Lioness, including for its first season which ran from July to September. Inspired by an actual United States military program, Lioness is about Joe (Saldaña) as she attempts to balance her personal life and being the tip of the CIA’s spear in the war on terror and their efforts to thwart the next major attack. The drama also stars Michael Kelly as Donald Westfield who co-runs the program with Kidman’s Kaitlyn Meade, and Morgan Freeman as Edward Mullins.
“Our Paramount+ audience resoundingly has joined forces in support of Lioness’ gripping, global story and the powerhouse performances from Zoe Saldaña, Laysla De Oliveira and Nicole Kidman,” said Jeff Grossman the Executive Vice President, Programming at Paramount+. “We cannot wait to see more of the heart-stopping suspense and action that Taylor Sheridan and the incredibly talented team deliver in its second season.” The series set a record as the streamer’s most-watched worldwide series premiere on launch day, with nearly 6 million total viewers in its first week across Paramount+ globally, with a linear preview on the Paramount Network also factored.
Chris McCarthy, the President & CEO of Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios who was elevated to be part of the Office of the CEO at Paramount Global after previous Bob Bakish was ousted, remarked: “Lioness captivated audiences around the world as one of the most-watched global series premieres on Paramount+ last year. Driven by Taylor Sheridan’s masterful storytelling and Nicole Kidman and Zoe Saldaña’s remarkable performances, season two promises to immerse audiences in yet another riveting, adrenaline-fueled journey.”
The series also stars Dave Annable, Jill Wagner, LaMonica Garrett, James Jordan, Austin Hébert, Jonah Wharton and Hannah Love Lanier. The series is executive produced by Sheridan, David C. Glasser, Saldaña, Kidman, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, David Hutkin, Jill Wagner, David Lemanowicz, Geyer Kosinski, Michael Friedman and Keith Cox.
