'Nurse Jackie' Sequel Series Moves Development From Showtime To Prime Video

The Nurse Jackie sequel series is no longer in development at (Paramount+ with) Showtime. It is now in development at Amazon Prime Video, with original series star Edie Falco still attached.

First reported to be in development last May at its original home network before the rebrand alongside a sequel series for Weeds, such a move is possible because the series is, like the original, produced by Lionsgate Television. It still means Showtime’s original programming took a hit in its rebuilding process, its programming strategy under the McCarthy regime losing one IP on the day before it announced its casting for the Dexter prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin. It is the second Showtime series to move to Amazon in recent years, as the Jeff Daniels-starring series American Rust was revived by Freevee in June 2022, five months after Showtime canceled it. It would eventually premiere season 2 on Prime Video this past March 28 with the subtitle Broken Justice.

The official logline for this sequel series states, “10 years after we left Jackie Peyton (Falco) clinging to life in the series finale, we find her back on her feet in spite of having lost her nursing license. The continuation of her story will find her facing new dilemmas in trying to be good in a world where being bad is often not only easier, but a lot more fun.” Original series producers and writers Liz Flahive and Abe Sylvia return as writers and executive producers, with Sylvia also attached to direct. Falco will also executive produce along with Bob Greenblatt, who is the former head of Showtime, as well as NBC and WarnerMedia Entertainment.

The original Nurse Jackie was created by Liz Brixius, Linda Wallem, and Evan Dunksy and aired for seven seasons and 80 episodes between 2009 and 2015. It was Falco’s first major starring vehicle after The Sopranos and gained immense critical acclaim. Falco was nominated for for four Golden Globes and six best comedy actress Emmys, winning in 2010. The show received 24 total Emmy nominations during its run, with Merritt Wever winning for best supporting actress in a comedy in 2013.
