'Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves' Arrives On Paramount+ Today

True to the 45-day theatrical exclusive window, Paramount Pictures and eOne's Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves arrives on Paramount+ on May 16.

Coming off a March 31 release date in the United States (presumably not counting Thursday previews), May 16 comes on Day 47, just a few days beyond the 45. Even Scream VI, who switched theatrical release dates with the film by three weeks, arrived right on time in that regard. Despite arriving about when expected, Honor Among Thieves was not on the listings for titles arriving this month. It should be noted, Tuesday continues to be the traditional home media release day. It is situated exactly halfway between digital purchase and rent release on May 2 and the physical DVD, Blu-ray and 4K release on May 30.

Starring Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves earned $38.5 million at the domestic box office, with a total worldwide gross of $205 million. This was despite very favorable critic reviews and great word of mouth from general audiences, a very easy improvement over the much-maligned previous 2000 adaptation starring Jeremy Irons. Its box office performance is not great, especially having come directly up against The Super Mario Bros. Movie before the end of its first week. Scream VI and John Wick Chapter 4 are the best-performing installment of their franchises, it's unknown how much better Honor Among Thieves could've done by opening earlier.

The Wrap is quite smug and condescending toward the film, but believes it will likely perform well for Paramount+, as a high-profile theatrical release and there will be subscribers who will at least be curious about it as it arrives on the service they're subscribed to and thus don't have to pay extra for. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is written and directed by Jonathan Goldstein & John Francis Daley, with a story from Chris McKay & Michael Gilio. The latter shares screenwriting credit with Goldstein and Daley. It is based on the tabletop RPG designed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson currently owned by Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast, set in a setting created by Ed Greenwood.
