CBS Sets September 25 For NCIS Day Celebrating 20th Anniversary

Choosing a Monday timeslot instead of Saturday to match the exact date, CBS has designated September 25 to be NCIS Day, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its premiere. This broader phase of the franchise premiered on September 23, 2003, a Tuesday timeslot the mothership held for much of its life thus far. And yes it truly began with the backdoor pilot in the Season 8 JAG episodes "Ice Queen" and "Meltdown", but now it's 459 episodes later plus four spinoffs that should bring the NCIS brand to 1,000 episodes sometime this season should the writers and actors get their fair deal.

To start, CBS has launched a new joint @NCISverse handle across all of the franchise’s social media platforms. A new offer also began on Thursday, where fans can take a 20% discount toward NCIS merchandise at ParamountShop.com, using the code NCIS20 at checkout until October 2.The 25th will also see the debut of CBS's "social take" on the Bandium app, which Gary Cole’s Special Agent Alden Parker introduced to the team in a Season 19 episode. This version of Bandium will be accessed through an opt-in messenger feature on Instagram and Facebook, allowing fans to receive exclusive content, personalized shareable content, special announcements and more. Signup can begin on September 18 through the franchise's Instagram and Facebook pages.

The main event is a marathon as big as CBS can do on a Monday night, three episodes from 8-11PM. Of course, with that little space it was going to just be the original series. It starts with the very first episode, "Yankee White", which saw NCIS Special Agents Gibbs, played by Mark Harmon, and Tony DiNozzo, played by Michael Weatherly, and medical examiner Dr. “Ducky” Mallard, played by David McCallum, arrive on Air Force One to investigate what at first seems to be a death by natural causes. Their investigation is made difficult by inter-agency squabbles with the FBI and Secret Service, each believing that they should be the primary investigating unit. Gibbs cunningly gets control of the case from the others, but still has to butt heads with Secret Service Agent Kate Todd (Sasha Alexander).

Second is the second season's penultimate episode, the 22nd out of 23, "SWAK". When a kiss-sealed letter is delivered to NCIS, Tony assumes it’s for him and opens it, releasing a mysterious powder into the squad room. Gibbs and the team must quarantine in the autopsy room while the strange powder is tested and identified. Abby (Pauley Perrette) discovers the substance is a genetically altered version of the plague, and so Tony and Kate are placed in a bio-hazard isolation ward to prevent exposure. Gibbs and McGee (Sean Murray) race to track down who sent the letter before it can cause any greater harm.

The third episode jumps all the way to season 19's "All Hands". The NCIS team, now led by Gary Cole's Alden Parker, arrives on a civilian research vessel in the North Atlantic that picked up some wounded Navy officers, and must hide after discovering terrorists on board. All American NCIS series are available on Paramount+ in their entireties to this point, while NCIS: Sydney will be available to American audiences once it starts airing on CBS week-to-week in November.
