'The Thundermans Return' Goes Long-Term With New Series Starring Phoebe, Max, And Chloe

The Thundermans are staying in production living a double life. Fresh off the apparent success of the reunion movie The Thundermans Return, the Nickelodeon superhero franchise is expanding again with a new series greenlight from Nickelodeon Studios, coming to both Nickelodeon and Paramount+.

The new series, which hasn’t had its title revealed, will follow Kira Kosarin as Phoebe and Jack Griffo as Max Thunderman who are sent undercover to handle a new threat in the seaside town of Secret Shores and bring Chloe, played once again by Maya Le Clark, along to train her in superheroing. It seems Chloe will infiltrate the school the threat seems to be coming from, and she forms a bond with two classmates while they investigate the suspicious activity from within, and her new friends don’t know about her powers. The increasing danger of the threat forces the Thunderman trio to stay in town indefinitely. Due to this, the now adult-aged twins are now in charge of raising their younger sister. Other original cast members will appear in guest roles, as production will begin in August in Vancouver.

Chloe, who had taken on the hero name “Thunderbaby” for probably longer than she should have (it’s pointed out during Returns’s opening action set piece) was born in the second season finale season of the original series. She was unashamedly rapidly aged with “growth spurts” in the third season premiere, when Le Clark was 3 years old. She’s now 13. It makes sense to want to write more for Chloe as she comes into her own with her array of powers that they didn’t quite get to in the original series. Less juvenility in the writing as the character grows up. In addition, it seems from compilation videos on YouTube that onscreen, Chloe didn’t get a lot of screentime with Max and Phoebe, this series will definitely help balance it out in their new living arrangements.

How successful was The Thundermans Return to garner even further continuation? It ranked as the top entertainment telecast for the year to date in Live+3 across all cable among Kids 6-11. It garnered 1.6 million total viewers throughout its premiere weekend across four airings from March 7-10 on Nickelodeon and Nick At Nite. Apparently Paramount+ hasn’t released their viewership stats yet. The new series is executive produced by original series creator Jed Spingarn, Sean W. Cunningham & Marc Dworkin. Kosarin and Griffo continue to be executive producers as they had so ascended for the movie. Production of the series for Nickelodeon Studios is overseen by Shauna Phelan, who is Head of Nickelodeon & Awesomeness’s Live-Action division. Brian Banks is Nickelodeon’s Executive in Charge of Production.
