Patrick Dempsey, Christina Millian, Sarah Michelle Gellar Among 6 Latest To Join 'Dexter: Original Sin'

Sarah Michelle Gellar is coming back to Paramount+, and it’s showtime for the boss of Dexter’s past. While the Wolf Pack star will just be a special guest star, Paramount+ with Showtime’s Dexter prequel series Dexter: Original Sin has five series regulars as production began in early June: Christina Millian, Reno Wilson, Alex Shimizu, fellow Wolf Pack alum James Martinez, and beloved Grey’s Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey.

As a prequel, you’re bound to find characters playing younger versions of those familiar. It goes halvesies her, with Martinez playing Angel Batista, originally played by David Zayas, here an up-and-coming homicide detective whose heart guides him; Milian plays Maria LaGuerta, originated by Luna Lauren Velez), Miami Metro’s first female in the field, seemingly positioned as more experienced but still a rookie at this point. and Shimizu plays Vince Masuka, originated by C.S. Lee, here a forensic analyst who mentors his intern Dexter, eager to share his expertise while bossing him around. Wilson plays a new character Bobby Watt, Harry’s longtime partner and confidant. Dempsey plays Aaron Spencer, Angel and Maria’s Captain, who has found himself very familiar with Harry, while Gellar will play Tanya Martin, the CSI chief at the Miami Metro Police Department, making her Dexter’s boss. It’s admittedly unclear whether she’s a genuine guest star or in a Matt Ryan Constantine regular “special appearance” kind of way  Dexter and Harry, his adopted father, were revealed to be played by Patrick Gibson and Christian Slater here in late May, with Molly Brown starring as young Debra Morgan, Dexter’s sister.

In addition to Wolf Pack, Martinez was most recently seen on Hulu’s Love, Victor. His history with CBS All Access/Paramount+ dates back to a credit on Tell Me a Story while previous roles also include House of Cards, One Day at a Time, CSIUnforgettable and Elementary. Milian is probably best known for her singing career, which led her to singing “Call Me, Beep Me!”, the theme song for Disney Channel’s Kim Possible. Most recently she was seen in the Netflix film Resort to Love, and stepping into the role of Collette Jones on the Step Up series following the death of Naya Rivera. She also starred on the Fox sitcom Grandfathered with John Stamos and Josh PeckShimizu most notably recurred on NBC’s The Blacklist, with credits on SWAT and The Terror. He will be featured in Taika Waititi’s upcoming series Interior Chinatown. Wilson’s career began with ten episodes of The Cosby Show as Howard. His best known series regular roles have been on Mike & MollyNBC’s Good Girls, Paramount+’s Fatal Attraction miniseries and Peacock’s Bel-Air. 

Best known as Dr. Derek Shepherd on the ABC series Grey’s Anatomy, earning him a SAG Award and multiple Golden Globe nominations, this is not Dempsey’s first series regular role in a long-form series since his 2015 departure, but the British series Devils, which aired stateside on The CW. His film resume includes ‘80s films such as Can’t Buy Me Love and Loverboy, the Disney Enchanted films, and more recently Ferrari and Thanksgiving. He’s also known for playing Detective Mark Kincaid in Scream 3, who becomes Sidney Prescott’s husband by 2022’s Scream installment. Gellar is best known for her seven years as Buffy Summers on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with series regular roles on CBS’s The Crazy Ones and The CW’s Ringer inbetween. Her film roles include I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream 2, and the Scooby-Doo movies.

Dexter: Original Sin’s ten-episode first season begins in 1991 Miami, 15 years before the original series. Dexter is a student on his way to becoming a serial killer. Unable to ignore his bloodthirsty urges anymore, Dexter looks to his father, who teaches him a Code built to help him seek out targets who deserve to die without being caught by law enforcement. The aforementioned internship at the at the police department is going to be quite the complication.

The series is executive produced by returning showrunner Clyde Phillips and produced by Showtime Studios and Counterpart Studios. Scott Reynolds also executive produces with Hall, Mary Leah Sutton, Tony Hernandez, Lilly Burns, with Robert Lloyd Lewis producing. Michael Lehmann will serve as directing executive producer.
