'I Love That For You' Canceled After One Season At Showtime

It's over for I Love That For You. The last scripted Showtime series in limbo has met its fate. The premium cable channel has canceled it after one season, despite high internal support and pushes to keep it alive. In fact, with a second season of the show already written, Annapurna, the show's production company is expected to shop it with the network's support.

The series starred Saturday Night Live alum Vanessa Bayer, who created the series with SNL writer Jeremy Beiler, with showrunners Jessi Klein and Michael Showalter. It was based on Bayer's own experiences with childhood leukemia. In the series, Joanna Gold, played by Bayer, has achieved her dream of becoming a successful home-shopping channel but lies about the return of her childhood cancer so she doesn't lose it. The series premiered in May 2022 and ran for eight episodes, finishing on June 19. It also starred another SNL alumnus Molly Shannon, as well as Paul James, Ayden Mayeri, Punam Patel, Jenifer Lewis and Matt Rogers. Bayer, Beiler, Klein, and Showalter are also executive producers with Megan Ellison, Sue Naegle, Jordana Mollick and Allyce Ozarski.

In preparation for its merger with Paramount+ under Chris McCarthy, Showtime has essentially been cleaning house, canceling American Gigolo, City on a Hill, The First Lady, Let the Right One InThe L Word: Generation Q and Ziwe, relinquishing King Shaka, Ripley, now at Netflix from whom the network picked up their now only comedy Uncoupled, starring Neil Patrick Harris, and Three Women, which is now at Starz. While Yellowjackets, whose early season 3 renewal in December remains the only one under the new regime, The Chi, and maybe Super Pumped remain, Billions is headed for its final season and becoming a focal point in the new strategy: franchising. Spinoffs of it, and new ones for Dexter and The L Word are in development, as well as revivals of Nurse Jackie and Weeds and an adaptation of Gattaca. Limited series like Fellow Travelers and new series like Seasoned with Mandy Patinkin are also coming.
